Practical and applied online training

100% online and running for 8 weeks, this course focuses on critical areas to drive meaningful impact. You'll select one specialisation from three options – Green Cities, Air Quality and Urban Mobility. You'll gain practical experience in designing an urban sustainability strategy action plan while integrating practical projects alongside real-world case studies. 

Participant profile

Urban Sustainability Strategy has been designed in collaboration with Arup, a leading global consultancy in sustainable development for government and enterprise organisations that have a vested interest in sustainable development practices within the built environment context. 

It has been designed for organisations within the urban planning, real estate, environmental consultancy, transportation, energy and finance sectors, wanting to gain a competitive edge in the evolving landscape of urban development.  

Program delivery

The first edition of the program will launch in Europe in September 2024. It is 100% online and will run for 8 weeks, with the first two weeks being dedicated to a sustainable cities sprint where you will select one of three specialisations. These specialisations are:  

  • Green Cities  
  • Air Quality 
  • Urban Mobility 

For the succeeding 6 weeks, you’ll explore Urban Sustainability Strategy through activity-based learning, expert webinars and collaborative discussions, culminating in a final project-based assessment.

FAQs for learners

General course information

Yes, there are regular interactive webinars, online forums, and scheduled 1:1 sessions with your industry mentor. The timing of these sessions will be agreed upon in the first week of your course with your cohort and industry mentor. You can attend these live or watch the recording the next day. 

This asynchronous section of this course will consist of video snippets. You can watch these whenever you like. There are also regular interactive webinars, online forums to chat with your peers and a scheduled 1:1 session with your industry mentor. 

This 8-week program consists of up to twelve modules of learning, two modules per specialisation and six modules for the core subject. To successfully complete the program, you’ll need to complete one specialisation and the core subject. You’ll have the option to study up to an additional 4 modules and earn an RMIT credential for each of the three specialisations you successfully complete.  

Course modules consist of individual activities, that can be completed in around 1.5-2 hours of study. Content is shaped through activity-based learning within our cloud-based learning management system, called Canvas. Rich media such as video, webinars, podcasts and interactive learning activities ensure you remain engaged. 

Your course experience is designed with social learning at its heart, enabling you to build networks with your cohort and collaborate on learning via Slack messaging. Slack is the main tool for collaborating with your peers and mentors throughout the course. 

Assessment and certification

Your chosen 2-week specialisation will be assessed through a quiz. For successful completion of the course, you’ll need to pass the quiz for one specialisation and the final project for the core subject.  

Throughout your course you’ll have the option to check-in with your mentor and gather feedback on the progress of your course project. 

The final project will require you to present your completed sustainability strategy action plan in a five-minute video, focusing on initiatives from your chosen specialisation (Green Cities, Urban Mobility, Air Quality). The final project will be due on Monday of Week 9. 

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be issued with an RMIT credential that you can share across social media platforms like LinkedIn. An RMIT credential demonstrates to employers that you have obtained relevant real-world skills, verified by industry.  

In this program, you’ll have the opportunity to earn up one for each specialisation and one for the program. 

This program does not contribute towards eligibility for credit transfer into other academic programs or degrees. 

Support and resources

As a student, you will be part of a mentored cohort, led by an industry expert on hand to provide subject matter and career advice. Your mentor will also provide expert feedback on your assessments ensuring you keep progressing on your study journey.  Your peer group will be on hand to provide further support.  

You’ll also have access to the learner success team at RMIT Online via email. Our learner success team are here to help you with 1:1 coaching, tips on how to successfully study online, and any questions or concerns you may have. 

You will receive an invitation to a live onboarding webinar the week before the course starts. Live onboarding typically will take place the Thursday preceding the course start date.  If you miss it, the link to the recording will be posted on the Online Student Support module in your dashboard. 

For regular course sessions, the timing of live (synchronous) sessions will be decided during the first week with input from your cohort and industry mentor. You can choose to attend these sessions live or watch the recordings, which will be posted the next day. The course also includes an asynchronous section with videos that you can watch at your convenience.
